"It is necessary to seek a new model of development for the Amazon that is not dependent on forest destruction. This awareness must start with environmental education in schools".
Carlos Nobre, Climatologist
National Geographic Magazine Brazil, 2007

The environmental crisis in the Amazon is ultimately a crisis of education

School of the Amazon is a program of the Cristalino Ecological Foundation. The school’s mission is to conserve the Amazon biome through education and communication. Our activities focus on raising the environmental awareness of Brazilian society - especially students and educators - on matters relating to biodiversity conservation and sustainable socio-economic development in the region.

We believe that the biggest environmental problem in the Amazon is not deforestation, illegal extraction of timber or the opening of roads, but societies lack of awareness and sensitivity to these problems. In other words, the environmental crisis in the Amazon is ultimately a crisis of education.
