We must stimulate interest in economic activities which do not involve deforestation

Approximately 60 percent of deforestation in the Amazon is caused by livestock. In Alta Floresta, farming livestock is by far the most important economic activity.

The “Alternative Practices” workshops are intended to stimulate interest in economic activities not involving extracting timber from the forest. Examples of such activities are beekeeping and ecotourism. They also promote the adoption of management practices which reduce the environmental impact of rearing livestock. The workshops are taught by professionals from different economic activities.

They happen in rural schools in the region and are aimed at students, their families and their teachers.
