Deforestation in Amazonia has long become an issue of worldwide concern. Most of such deforestation takes place on the agricultural frontier and is associated with the expansion of croplands in the neighboring biome, the Cerrado.

The Deforestation Frontier Expedition offers a unique opportunity to learn firsthand the reality of deforestation in Amazonia, its relationship with the agribusiness in the transition zone between Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) and Amazonia, its implications at local, regional and global scales, the actors involved, and the challenge of halting deforestation without impairing development.

By combining academic rigor with the excitement of directly witnessing the highest biodiversity on Earth, the International Workshop explores the complex issues around sustainability in Amazonia to reach a rather simple conclusion: the future of Amazonia is in the hands of everyone of us
